Doodle Blueline Tests and Greenbelt 2011

I did some Giant Rhinos sketches while I was at Greenbelt. I wanted to see what they would look like with blue line art because I've been using this kind of colour scheme on a comic for my Ink+Paper submission.

These are gig sketches from the weekend. The bands featured here are Paul Bell, Extra Curricular, Listener, Idlewild, Jenny Lockyer, Helen Arney and The Unthanks. For more gig sketches visit flickr.

Gig Sketches and Jumping the Shark

Sorry about there being no new posts over the past couple of months, I'm still working on the comic I just don't want to give too much away. Gig sketches have been quite important for the Giant Rhinos comics so I thought I could post some more here. These sketches are from The Godiva Festival in July. The bands are Russian Gun Dogs, Skylight, Young Knives and The Sunshine Underground. I also set up a Flickr set which compiles a lot of my gig sketches from the past couple of years.

I have been continuing my webcomic short story website since finishing university. The story currently being uploaded weekly is called Jumping the Shark. It is a sequel to Best Day Ever and it will feature the Giant Rhinos characters later in the story.

I'm working on a couple of other short stories for some group anthologies over the summer. I'm very excited to be contributing a slice of life comic in Ink + Paper and compiling a Sci-Fi anthology with Inspired Comics.

Bristol SP Expo 2011 and Dummy Books

Sorry I've not updated in a while. I hit a point where I didn't want to give away any more of the story and things. I have printed some dummy books that contain the first chapter of the Giant Rhinos In Space graphic novel. I had a lot left over after the London Book Fair so I've decided to sell the 18 copies left. I am selling for exactly the printing costs and I've added a unique sketch inside each copy.

Thank you to anyone who bought a copy from the Inspired Comics table at Bristol Small Press Expo.

The comics are available from my Etsy shop and probably the next couple of events Inspired Comics have a table at.

This blog is probably going to be uploading slower than previously. It will still be the best way to keep track of the project. If you'd like to follow other projects I'm working on - I have a general portfolio blog now and also a more personal tumblr blog which updates more frequently and is full of sketches and photos.

Research Experiment

This isn't for this Giant Rhinos project, but I used the same characters for a pretend advert in my Research Experiment final piece. You can read the whole parody comic online here.

I've set up a new portfolio blog you might be interested in too.

This is a new cover for the dummy book. The pages I'd posted before have changed because I had to add some things to the first chapter.

Stella Arena - New Colouring

When I was colouring the final comic pages I decided to remove large amounts of gradients. This worked really well and I thought I'd test the same changes on these design illustrations. I prefer this a lot more than the original colouring.

Sorry I've not been posting as much design work recently. I'm working on chapter 1 and I'm not sure how much of that I would like to put online.

I took a slight break from uploading stuff because I went to Angouleme Comics Festival with my University. This is a pencil crayon drawing from the many different trains it took to get there and back. I might re-use the composition idea later.

These are badge designs taken from the blog background pattern. I'm hoping they might arrive in time for Midlands MCM Expo.

Stella Arena Staff

This is a ROAD-E like the 3 I posted before. But this is a ROAD-E working and isn't a specific character. The display screen can work like a chromatic tuner.

This is Lesley, the presenter of the music shows that Stella Arena hosts.

These are the Judges, along with John (I posted a character sheet of him earlier)

ROAD-Es & Stella Arena Time Travel

This is ROAD-E 0003, ROAD-E 0002 and ROAD-E 0001. They are characters that play important roles in the graphic novel. The robots original purpose is being road crew and band technicians on the Stella Arena Space Station.

0002 and 0001 drive a time traveling space craft and these are the final designs for the exterior and interior.

Giant Rhinos ON TOUR & Wayne and Kerry

This is a free mini comic that I'm going to take to comics events throughout the year. I also put them in the post with anything from my Etsy shop. This is the 2nd mini comic I've created containing the Giant Rhinos. You can read the first issue online here.

These are the character sheets for Wayne and Kerry. Wayne is Terry's twin brother which is why he is so jealous of any of the Giant Rhinos success. He plays guitar left handed and you can see this in the mock cover artwork in the sidebar.

Stella

These are the character sheets for John, Annie and Stella. They are the family and all work in the alien music industry.

These are a slightly different type of alien. They've got 2 less arms but 2 more fingers than the green aliens. They have flared ankles like their wrists. All the dancers are identical. There will probably be 4 girls and 4 boys.

This is the same arena background but with Stella's set.
