Giant Rhinos Drumsticks and New Plectrum Designs

I’d like to say a quick thank you to everyone who bought my comics from the small press table at Caption over the weekend. I had a brilliant time at the event and I’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone involved with organisation and all the panels and workshops.

I’ve printed some brand new Giant Rhinos fictional cartoon band merchandise in time to take to London MCM Comic Con next weekend!

I had some drumsticks printed for the first time. They are 5A American Hickory Drumsticks. I asked some musical friends and 5A are good sticks for beginners because they are in the middle of the scale and are good all rounders. (There was some debate over 5B sticks, but unfortunately I could only afford one type to start with, but if they are popular enough I might be able to expand and design more)

I’ve also printed new plectrum designs. The Giant Rhinos plectrums are GLOW IN THE DARK - Ooooo. So if you drop your plectrum and can’t see where it landed, you can just turn off the lights! (Black Like My Heart plectrums are also now available slightly thicker at 0.81)

You’ll be able to find my table at London MCM Comic Con in the Comic Village at table CG11. A map hasn’t been published online yet - but look out for row G and I will try my best to tweet better directions when I get to the show on the Friday morning. (@ sammyborras )

If you can’t get to London - I have a online Etsy shop and more events are listed in the blog sidebar.

Don’t forget I will have FREE MINI COMICS to give to people at every event this term. If I’m too busy chatting and miss handing you one - the secret password is ‘Do you have a business card?’ ... and I will hand you a little comic instead (because we all know mini comics are x8 better than a plain old business card)

Plectrums and Cover Art

I designed some new plectrums recently. They are available to order through my Etsy shop. All Etsy orders come with a free mini comic featuring characters from Giant Rhinos In Space.
Don’t forget you can catch up with the first 2 chapters of Giant Rhinos In Space online here. I’m hoping to launch chapter 3 early in the new year!

Giant Rhinos In Space #2 Cover Design

Giant Rhinos In Space is a long format comic I have been working on this year. I have been uploading 3 pages per week and now the first chapter is all available to read online and in print. I'm taking a hiatus from uploading so I can work on some smaller comics for zines and anthologies. This is the illustration for chapter 2.

New Merchandise!

I printed some new merchandise for the events I attended in the autumn.  The Zine! vinyl stickers are 80mm and pin badges are 38mm. The Giant Rhinos plectrums are glow in the dark! They are all available to order online through my Etsy shop.

Free Mini Comic: Party Poopers

New free mini comic to hand out at events! This year Inspired Comics Collective have confirmed tables at Manchester MCM Expo in July and London MCM Expo in October. The secret password to guarantee you get your copy is 'Do you have a business card?'

I'm still deciding whether to post the poster drawing online or keep it secret for those who get hold of the print version.

Terry and Julie

Giant Rhinos - Steve, Terry and Carl.

Julie and Terry

Ray Davies & Damon Albarn - Waterloo Sunset

Sarah dared me to post this live version in the post with Terry and Julie. I do name a lot of characters after songs but Terry was originally named after something else.

Doodle Blueline Tests and Greenbelt 2011

I did some Giant Rhinos sketches while I was at Greenbelt. I wanted to see what they would look like with blue line art because I've been using this kind of colour scheme on a comic for my Ink+Paper submission.

These are gig sketches from the weekend. The bands featured here are Paul Bell, Extra Curricular, Listener, Idlewild, Jenny Lockyer, Helen Arney and The Unthanks. For more gig sketches visit flickr.

Giant Rhinos & Carl

I've been working on this project for about half a year already so its difficult to know what to start this blog with. I think I will start with Character sheets and then try and add interesting things in between. I hope you enjoy reading about the project.

These are the main characters in the graphic novel (right to left) Terry, Steve and Carl. I spent most of the summer trying to give them more consistent character designs because when they first appeared in Best Day Ever and a Free Mini comic their faces changed every time.

This is one of the pages from Best Day Ever that they appear on. You can read the full Best Day Ever comic online.

This is a page from a free mini comic I created very quickly around the same time as drawing Best Day Ever. I still didn't have the final character sheets at this point so the characters would have inconsistent hair and faces.

I'm very glad I now have the character sheets to refer to and drawing the characters many times actually changed them slightly to how they first appeared, but I think this is an improvement.

I'm currently working on a new free comic to give out in the new year, I'm hoping it will be a better representation of my work because the first free comic was drawn very quickly and rushed. The character featured on the cover is Carl, the bass player in the Giant Rhinos.

I've tried to do as much location drawing as possible for this project. Mostly of any live music I went to. These sketches are from when I saw blur in 2009. I have based some of Carl's playing habits on the body language I have seen at gigs. I try to make Carl seem as laid back as possible when playing which is interesting because he worries and panics the most out of all of the characters when they meet aliens.

This is a small pen drawing from one of my sketchbooks. The 2 girls probably wont feature in the graphic novel, but they are Carl's elder sisters, Em (left) and Nat (right).

You might find it interesting to see my friend Sarah's drawing of Carl in her own style.

Thanks for reading, I will try and update with some more stuff soon.
